Attendance management on a construction site is not the same as attendance management in an office. It does not end when someone taps in and taps out. What matters is who was on which site that day, how many man-days they are credited with, and whether that record carries through to labour-cost settlement and statutory filings without drifting. When there are several sites and the subcontracted crews change daily, this chain is the first thing to break.
Why the office approach does not work on site
First, the workforce is not fixed. The formwork crew that worked at Site A today is at Site B tomorrow. In an office, one person's record runs continuously between joining and leaving; for day labourers, the attendance record stops and restarts at every site.
Second, there are several layers of management. There is the main contractor, the specialist subcontractors beneath them, and the crew leaders below that. Depending on who fills in the attendance sheet, the same person on the same day can end up recorded twice.
Third, the unit of a day is the man-day, not the hour. If rain stopped work at midday, whether that counts as half a man-day or a full one varies by site custom. When crews apply different rules, month-end settlement will collide.
Fourth, the record does not stop at attendance. The range of sites covered by Korea's electronic card system for construction workers has kept widening, and retirement-deduction filings require accurate day counts. If the attendance data is wrong, every filing built on top of it wobbles.
The four places attendance records drift
The points where things actually break tend to be the same ones.
- Attendance sheets are written by hand while settlement is done in a spreadsheet, and numbers change as someone copies between them
- A crew leader clocks in on behalf of the whole crew, leaving people recorded on site who were never there

They share a cause: the place the record is created and the place it is used sit apart. The site makes it on paper and in spreadsheets, head office consumes it for settlement and filings, and anything a person retypes in between will drift.

Treated as nothing more than clocking in and out, construction attendance management looks like a poor return. In practice a single dataset carries several jobs at once.
Accurate attendance records give labour-cost settlement something to stand on. Standardise how man-days are counted across sites and there is far less to reconcile at month end.
